Brief History of The School
The School of Pure and Applied sciences came to being from the unbundling of the former school of science and computer studies in the year 2026 in which two (2) departments were transferred to another schools. Art and Industrial Design department was moved to the school of Environmental Studies and Computer Science to the School of Computing Information, Communication Technology. The school metamorphous from School of technology that was established in the year 1978 as one of the pioneering schools in the then Federal College of Technology, Akure (later known as Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti) with three pioneering Departments: Building Technology, Food Technology and Science Technology. Another Department Glass and Ceramics Technology came into existence in 1986, in the same school.
The new School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS) presently has ten (10) Departments which includes: Food Technology, Glass and Ceramic Technology, Science Laboratory Technology, Hospitality and Management Technology, Statistics, Mathematics,(serving department) Applied Chemistry. Microbiology, Physics with Electronics and Biochemistry Departments.
Right from the inception of the Polytechnic, the School has been in the forefront of scientific and technological research. The school has been recruiting competent staff to aid effective and efficient teaching of practicals and theories in the relevant academic fields. However, the School has embarked on staff development to update knowledge of staff in modern training in Scientific and technological fields. This includes long and short-term training in equipment maintenance and acquisition in order to equip and modernize our various laboratories.
The School has also established a central research laboratory which is expected to be equipped adequately to enable it cope with research in Biotechnology among others.
