The History of the Department
The Department of Mathematics occupies a strategic position within the academic framework of the Polytechnic because mathematics provides the analytical foundation upon which many disciplines in science, technology, engineering and management depend. From the early years of the institution, mathematics has played a vital role in developing logical reasoning, quantitative competence and analytical thinking among students.
In the formative stage of the Polytechnic, mathematics did not exist as an independent department. It was located within the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, where it formed an integral part of the scientific curriculum. The mathematics unit was responsible for teaching both departmental and Polytechnic service courses, thereby supporting students across several programmes that required strong quantitative skills.
As the Polytechnic expanded and its academic programmes diversified, the institutional structure evolved to reflect emerging academic needs. Mathematics was subsequently reorganised together with computing under the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, a structure that recognised the close relationship between mathematical reasoning and computational thinking.
With the rapid advancement of computing and the growing demand for specialised training in information technology, the Department of Computer Science was later established as an independent unit. Following this development, the remaining academic structure operated as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, bringing together two closely related disciplines centred on quantitative analysis and data interpretation.
In 2023, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics was administratively renamed the Department of Statistics, with mathematics activities continuing within the department. However, the need for greater disciplinary focus led to another restructuring in 2025, when the arrangement was formally unbundled to establish two independent departments: the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics.
Members of staff have attended seminars, conferences and workshops within and outside the state.The academic staff of the department are registered members of many relevant and reputable professional bodies.
Dr. Abdullahi Adedeji
HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
Dr. Abdullahi Adedeji served as the pioneer Head of the Department. He joined the service of the Polytechnic in 1993 as an Assistant Lecturer and steadily rose through the academic ranks to attain the position of Chief Lecturer. Over the course of his career, he has contributed significantly to teaching, research, and the administrative development of the department and the Polytechnic.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Mathematics. He further broadened his academic expertise by obtaining a Master of Information Science and later a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Information Science. His multidisciplinary training has enriched both his academic work and his leadership within the institution.
Throughout his professional career, he has participated in numerous seminars, conferences and workshops within and outside the state, demonstrating a commitment to continuous professional development and scholarly engagement. He is also a member of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria.
He is happily married and blessed with children.
