The Department of Food Science and Technology (FST)
The School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS) The Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria.
You Are Welcome to The Department of Food Science and Technology (FST)
History
The Department of Food Science and Technology was established and started functioning along with other pioneering Academic Departments of The Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti in October 1979, back in Akure, Ondo State with 52 students and seven senior staff members.
The Department has excellent facilities for training and equiping National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) Diplomates for the budding Food and allied industries not only in Nigeria, but globally. Presently, both ND and HND programs are fully accredited by the supervising body, The NBTE.
The Department had a succession of Heads of Department over the years, from 1979. Dr. S.H.R. Rizvi, a Pakistani was the substantive Head of Department, a position he held until 1982. Dr. Okunade O. A (An alumnus of the Department) is the current Head of Department.
Through these years, the Department has witnessed considerable growth in student enrollment, staff strength and laboratory facilities. The Department has at present eight (8) fully equipped Laboratories, Viz; Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Nutrition/Quality Control, Bakery and Confectionery, Food Processing 1 (Fruit and Vegetable/Food Process Engineering), Food Processing II (Root and Tuber), Food Processing III (Animal Products) and Sensory Evaluation Laboratory. Additional laboratories have been constructed for the use of the Department. They include; the Industrial Microbiology/Biotechnology Laboratory and the new Food Chemistry/Instrumentation Laboratory Jointly referred to as the Central Research Laboratory (CTL).
The facilities in these laboratory meet up with required standards. It is expected that this will further enhance the enviable image of the Department especially in Practical and Research aspects, for which many senior members of staff of the Department are renowned.
