The Department of Microbiology
The School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS) The Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria.
You Are Welcome to The Department of Microbiology
From Unit to Department: A Strategic Reorganization
The establishment of the Department of Microbiology as a full-fledged academic unit on January 13th, 2026, marking the commencement of the 2025/2026 academic session, represents a significant milestone in the history of The Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti. This pivotal transition was the culmination of a broader, strategic unbundling of the former School of Science and Computer Studies, a massive restructuring exercise that aimed to better align the institution's academic offerings with the evolving demands of science, technology, and industry.
Prior to this date, microbiology existed as a unit within the larger Department of Science Technology. This structure, while providing a foundational platform, often constrained the specialized growth and focused development required by the rapidly advancing field of microbiology.
The Birth of a Dedicated Center of Learning
On January 13th, 2026, the Department of Microbiology officially came into being, inheriting the legacy and groundwork laid by its predecessor unit while embarking on a new trajectory of growth and innovation. The initial years were marked by:
-
Curriculum Development: Faculty members, now within a dedicated department, embarked on a comprehensive review and revitalization of the microbiology curriculum. The goal was to create programs that were not only theoretically sound but also practically relevant, incorporating the latest advancements and industry requirements. This included the introduction of new courses in areas like molecular biology techniques, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and microbial genetics.
-
Faculty Recruitment and Development: The department actively sought to recruit experienced microbiologists with diverse specializations. Simultaneously, existing faculty members were encouraged to pursue advanced research and professional development opportunities to enhance their expertise.
-
Infrastructure and Laboratory Upgrades: Recognizing the critical role of practical training in microbiology, the department prioritized the upgrade of laboratory facilities. This involved acquiring modern equipment, enhancing safety protocols, and creating specialized labs for cell culture, molecular biology, and microbial analysis.
