Our goal is to develop skilled and versatile graduates who can make meaningful contributions to the fields of healthcare, agriculture, industry, and research, both locally and globally.
Our Vision
We aspire to be a leading center of excellence in Biochemistry education and research within the Nigerian polytechnic system. Our vision is to produce graduates who are not only academically proficient but also innovative, ethical, and capable of addressing contemporary challenges in science and technology.
Academic Programs
The Department offers undergraduate programs leading to the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Biochemistry. Our curriculum is designed to balance theoretical knowledge with extensive practical exposure, ensuring students are well-prepared for the demands of the workforce or further academic pursuits. Key areas of study include:
-
Core Biochemistry: Biomolecules, Enzymes, Metabolism, Molecular Biology, Clinical Biochemistry, Nutrition.
-
Applied Sciences: Analytical Chemistry, Physiology, Genetics, Microbiology, Immunology.
-
Practical Skills: Laboratory techniques, data analysis, research methodology.
History
The Department of Biochemistry was created on the 12th of November 2025 when some schools and departments were unbundled. It was formerly a unit under the old department of Science Laboratory Technology. It is a department with only HND programme. The present Head of Department who is also the pioneer HOD is Dr A. B. Olaoye.
Admission/Entry requirements
Applicants must possess:
- Credit passes in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in not more than two (2) sittings in SSCE/NECO/GCE/NABTEB.
- At least a lower credit level pass in the National Diploma in Science Technology programme.
- Minimum of one (1) year post-National Diploma in Science Technology programme.
- In exceptional cases, a National Diploma with a pass in the ND examinations with two (2) or more years of cognate experience may be considered for admission.
